The Maggi Mee Phenomenon

On our way back from Awana Kijal on Saturday, when we were almost reaching the end of our 4 and a half hours journey, Alan Tsing brought up the topic of 'Maggi Mee'. Everyone in the car got excited. [Everyone loves Maggi Mee. And when I say Maggi Mee, I mean the real deal Maggi Mee. NOT Cintan Mee, Indo Mee or whatever mee that's currently being sold out there]

There's no doubt that Maggi Mee is every Malaysian's favorite instant noodles. And almost everyone has their own way/ preference in preparing the noodles.

The way my colleagues described in detail how they like their Maggi Mee prepared, it's almost as if they were talking about an art form which they perfected.

Alice: "I like mine with the noodles still springy, not too soft, with eggs and sometimes with lettuce. The water must be as little as possible so that the soup will actually come out like thick gravy"

YY: "I'll put in an egg only, I don't like too many things inside my mee."

Alan: "My brother is very anal about his Maggi Mee. He'll not allow anyone to cook it but himself. He'll get me to boil the water, put in the seasoning powder and noodles, then he'll shoo me out of the kitchen, grab a pair of chopsticks and stir the boiling noodles then he's walk out of the kitchen with a satisfied look on his face and tell us his way of cooking Maggi Mee is the best"

[Okaaay, Alan's brother, by just stirring the noodles, it's not considered really cooking it, you know]

Me: "I like mine with less water as well and I only put in an egg. I also like mine springy not soft and kembang. And I only eat it out of the pot. Don't like eating it out of a bowl"

Chriz: "Maggi Mee is like the best instant noodles. Talking about it makes me hungry. I wanna eat maggi mee when I get home later, la."
[She really did. When I texted her later that night, she told me she had Maggi Mee for dinner]

Incredible. It's just instant noodles but everyone has their own preferred way of cooking it and they'd create their own recipe in preparing their perfect Maggi Mee.

When my college mates went abroad to study, the must-have item in their packing list was boxes of Maggi Mee. I visited them in Auckland a year into their studies and discovered that over there, they'd hide their Maggi Mee as if it's precious gold. Their mee will be stolen if they were not careful in keeping it. Gasp!! {:O

Some of them even made it their daily meal. Just imagine that! 1 and a half years of daily Maggi Mee consumption. I heard that too much Maggi Mee will cause one to lose their hair.

When I pointed that out, my mates just shrugged and ignored me. Hmmph! They probably know the negative effects of eating too much Maggi Mee but they were just not bothered.

It's fascinating just how much Malaysians love their Maggi Mee... It's something that we can't live without. Even the most health-conscious person will sometimes give in to the Maggi Mee temptation.

Long live the Maggi Mee!!
