Working in Asia

I just came to a conclusion that working in Asia really sucks. Why? Coz most Asian companies [read: owned by Asians] don't believe in rewarding their staff. When an employee performs well, he/she doesn't really get the recognition he/she deserves. The boss will still try to think of ways to scrimp on bonuses, increments, promotions, etc. Most companies don't believe in treating their staff to company trips and giving bonuses. It's either you get the trip or the bonus. If you're lucky, you'd get both, but the bonus will be thinner... Chinaman mentality. Damn kiamsiap!! {:O

Also, what I realised is, in Asia, employees who stay back and work overtime [OT? What OT?] are taken for granted. The bosses don't give 2 hoots to how late the employee works. As long as they get the job done, even if it means working late into the night, the bosses don't give a damn. In some companies, it's even expected of employees to stay back in the office and those who leave sharp at 5pm will get the 'look' from everyone else. Where else, our Western counterparts consider it unproductive if you stay back in the office and work late. They believe, if you are truly efficient and productive, you will be able to finish your day's work on time. There's no such thing as working late except if you have really tight deadlines [which is seldom].

Therefore, life in Western countries is more laidback compared to ours. Everyone clocks out at 5pm. In places like Australia, even shopping malls and most of the shops will close at 5pm. Rarely you hear people working after 5pm.

Here, working til 8pm-9pm is considered the norm. If you leave early, it's as if you are too lazy to put in more hours in your work and it'll reflect quite badly on you.

Strange isn't it?

Isn't life meant to be enjoyed? Why are we slaving our days away working our asses off and most of the time, don't even get the recognition we deserve? Where's the rewards, words of appreciation, increments and promotions that'll surely motivate us to work even better?

Don't know about you, after pondering on this long and hard, I sure prefer to work in Australia where I can kick back and relax everyday come 5pm ;P
