Langkawi Trip 20-23 March 2008

At last, my long awaited beach holiday finally arrived!!

Yippeee...

On Day 1:

For the first ever time, Yaacob and I managed to reach the airport early. We waited in line patiently to wait for the check-in counter to open, checked in our luggages and even had time for breakfast! Amazing... We didn't end up running after the aircraft like we usually do [drama, I know... What's new?]. After breakfast, we had time to cam-whore for a while before heading to the departure gate...

While waiting for boarding time, I read a few pages of my book then decided to just snap pics, which was more fun. I really hafta make a mental note to always always arrive at the airport early coz it's so relaxing not to rush for a change :)

Yaacob spotted a pair of sandals worn by a lady seated at the boarding gate. They're a pair of white ones... I like it!! The hunt is on...
After an hour's flight, we reached Langkawi airport. Of coz I must snap some pics when I was at the bay... Hehe..

Then, while waiting to collect out luggage, I walked around the place to collect maps and brochures of the island so that we would know where to go, etc...

We reached our resort, The Frangipani Langkawi Resort & Spa after about a 20 minute cab ride. The resort looked quite promising as first...

The room's really spacious but I think the space was kinda under-utilised... Plus the floor was not that clean. The bed's really huge though... There was a balcony with a couple of chairs and a table for us to chill at... The balcony's space was huge as well...

We had lunch at the resort's Mentari Restaurant. Big mistake. The place was swarming with flies and the food sucks... Eee yuck!!
After lunch, we explored the resort...

After walking around the whole place, I discovered that it's not that great. Some parts of the beach were covered in grass. The sand was not soft and the sea looked murky. The resort didn't look as good as it did in the website. The villas were not that great. Urgh... And about 99% of the guests were foreigners with kids.

The whole place was just too quiet and I just didn't have a good feeling about it. Not so happening.

We went back to the room to chill after exploring...

In the evening, we went for a stroll on the beach. Before that, we were pissed off by the rude bartendar at the bar by the pool. We ordered 2 cups of ice cream and waited for, like, forever and still they did not serve us. I mean, how long does it take to scoop out 2 scoops of chocolate ice cream into cups??

The bartender were not helpful at all and his attitude really sucks. Instead of helping us check our order, he asked us to pick the Wall's ice cream from the ice box. What the @$%#! If we wanted to do that, we wouldn't have asked for scoop ones!!

In the end, we cancelled our order and took a couple of ice creams from the ice box. The place certainly does not layan locals well. They focus all their attention on the mat sallehs...

Our stroll on the beach were quite interesting...

Guess what we found on the beach? First, there was this detergent bottle that washed ashore, then we saw an apple. Yess.... An APPLE!!! How on earth the apple got washed ashore was beyond my comprehension... But an apple??!!! A rotten apple to be exact... Really, Langkawi should keep its beaches cleaner.

We walked quite a long way then turned back. Spotted a nice open air kinda restaurant by the beach. It looked really nice...

On our way back to our room, we saw a couple of hornbills perched on a tree. Cool...
The hotel recommended the Orkid Ria Seafood Restaurant for dinner. It was located at Pantai Cenang, really near our hotel. The food was fantastic and the service was really good!! We ordered crabs, prawns, vegetables and tom yam soup [yummeeeee!!]. We managed to finish all the food within half an hour... Yes, that was how hungry we were... Kekekeekkee...
Pantai Cenang was a really quiet place. Unlike Phuket's Patong beach that was so full of life at night, this place looked dead. Urgghhh... Totally not happening... Went back to the hotel to zzzZZZ...

On Day 2:

Yaacob and I took a cab to Mount Mat Cincang for the cable car ride up to the peak where we will supposedly get a breathtaking view of the entire island. It's quite far from Frangipani and our cab ride cost RM22!

It was really really hot that day! So hot that the moment we got off the cab, we dashed to a neaby warung to buy water. There was a souvenir shop at the warung and while waiting for pay for our water, I saw some hats and decided to try some on.

Me: "How do I look?"

Yaacob: "You look ok."

Me: "Should I get it?"

Yaacob: "Well, get it if you want."

So I got a hat. For RM2 cheaper :P

I was really happy with the hat and put it on right away coz it was so damn hot and I didn't put on any sunblock at all. The fact that I was wearing a pair of really short shorts and a spaghetti strap top didn't help to make my skin burn less under the scorching sun!!

Then, I noticed a lot of people were looking at me. I began to feel self-conscious. Like, 'what-the-heck-were-they-looking-at' kinda feeling.

I poked Yaacob.

Me: "Do I look silly with the hat?"

Yaacob: [looked at me] "No."

Me: "Really? You sure?"

Yaacob: [looked at me again] "No, you don't look silly, ok?"

Me: "Well, then why are people looking at me? The hat's too big? Are you absolutely sure I don't look silly??"

Yaacob: "If you feel uncomfortable wearing the hat, just leave it at the shop and collect it later."

Me: "No, I don't wanna leave it at the shop. I just wanna know if I look silly."

Yaacob: "No you don't!"

In the end, I decided I would not care if people are looking. I've decided not to allow that to make me feel silly walking around with a big floppy hat with colors that clash with my outfit. I would wear it and shade my shoulders and head from the sun!

Walked around the Oriental Village. There were a snake and an eagle that you could take pics with by paying dunno how much. There were bridges and shops in the place. Quite a nice place to walk around if it was not so bloody hot.

We found the cable car station and check out the line, man... We waited in line, sweating like mad, just to get the tix. Thank goodness, they give discounts to Malaysians. Hehe...

We decided to get some snacks to eat during our ride up.

The security people didn't allow us to bring any water or food in. $#$@!

Yaacob gulped down his bottle of water and hid our snacks into my bag [lucky I brought a big bag that day!!]. Then, we entered the place to line up somemore to board the cable car.

The scene was really amazing...
Finally, we got to the peak!!

I'm afraid of heights actually. So, my knees fell a bit wobbly while we were up at the peak. I felt like my legs were gonna give way and I'd fall and fall and fall when I walked around the place...

But, still managed to snap pics :P

I held on to Yaacob most of the time when I wanted to walk around.

After a while, I've had enough of the view and the cool air. Really felt like falling... Couldn't tahan the height... Scary...

We lined up and got into a cable car to go back down...

I discovered a Rabbit Farm and a place where there's an elephant that gives rides back at the Oriental Village. There was this charming little cafe near the cable car station. But, we wanted to go to the Underwater World next, so no time to sit down for a drink there.
Yes, of coz I snapped damn a lot of pics while making my way outta the place :P
This is a view of the Telaga Harbour from the cab. This is where all the yachts are docked. Looked like a place for rich people to park their private yachts and boats. Hmmm... Wonder when I'll be able to afford a yacht of my own and park it there...
Had lunch at a little restaurant before going into the Underwater World. Again, we got discounts for the tix for being Malaysians. Hehe... For once, being a Malaysian feels so damn good...

We walked in and saw really huge fishes! They're super-big. Scary, man...

Walked in further and saw swans, flamingos and ducks chilling... Wow...

I made Yaacob kneel down beside me to try to take a pic of us with the flamingos at the back... Tried several times but failed. Our arms weren't long enough to take the shot :(

I kept pestering Yaacob to try again, try again, til a kind Indian lady walked up to us and said "Here, lemme help you take a pic." Hehe... Quite the memalukan... But what to do... I really wanted to have that pic taken. So we posed and she took a really really nice pic of us [check out the bottom left pic! Can see 1 flamingo at the back... Hehe...].

There was a parrot and we snapped pics with it too.

There was a super-duper-giant green anaconda near where all the birds were. Eeewww... Super geli and scary to watch it slowly slither into the water.. Gave me goosebumps just watching it...
After the snake, we went to the sea lions' section. They were a bunch of playful creatures. Yaacob likes sea lions. We spent quite long there, just watching them swim and fool around. Very cute.

Yaacob pointed at one who was sleeping. "Hmmm... That sleeping one must be old, look at its fur. It's kinda light," I commented seriously. "That's coz its dry, sweets. When it's wet, it'll look black like the rest," Yaacob said. Ooops, okay, so I dunno much about sea lions... Hehe... Malunya!!!
Then, some people came to feed the sea lions. So exciting!! They put on a show for us during the feeding time!! The sea lions are like dogs. Really manja and extremely intelligent.
Next section were the penguins. They looked really odd la... But, it's quite cool to see them live instead of from TV.

There were 2 types of penguins. Yaacob and I stared at the 2nd type in disbelief! It looked exactly like one of the penguins from the animated movie 'Surf's Up'! It had blond eyebrows. Wow, and I thought they purposely put in the blond stuff on the penguin in the movie to make it look cool and more surfer-like. Dunno that there really is a species of penguins like that. Okaay, I dunno much about penguins as well... Heheh... Malu-nya!!!

Then, there were various sea creatures on display. Some looked cute, some looked disgusting, some looked downright scary...
There was a sting ray! How cool!! I was fascinated by how it sorta like floated in the water. It swam round and round and round its aquarium.

Me: "Oooh look!" [pointed at the sting ray's underside as it swam by] "See? It's like a face! It's got eyes and a smiley mouth!" [I pointed excitedly at it]
Yaacob: "Sweets, that's not a face. The eyes are at the top part of the body."

Oooops!! Okaaaay... So, I dunno much about sting rays as well!! Hmmm... So memalufying!!! Aaaaahhhhh.... [Note to self: MUST read more on sea creatures!!!!!]

We walked by a couple of otters then saw more sea creatures. The jelly-fishes looked beautiful!

After all the underwater experience, we went straight to the duty-free shop next door and bought chocolates and booze.

I was aching all over and felt really tired. So, when we got back to the hotel, we walked to the nearby spa for body and foot massages. Felt so relaxed after that :)

When we got outta the spa, it began to drizzle a bit. Yaacob knew I wanted to try the restaurant by the beach which we saw the day before while walking along the beach, so he took me there. It was called 'The Lighthouse'. And... We got the worst treatment ever!!

The waiter at the door told us the restaurant's full even without checking upstairs. The place was full of foreigners. Yaacob asked the waiter if he could check upstairs and the waiter told us to wait. Then, a group of foreigners arrived and they immediately got ushered in. What the @$%#! So, they only layan mat sallehs and treat the locals like shit??!! We're not even allowed into the restaurant? Yes, I admit we both just got outta the spa and were not dressed to the nines. But, it's a beach side restaurant for god's sake! I don't think I need to show up in a gown to get a table. So, remember... The Lighthouse!! Never, never, ever go there!!!

I was so angry. I know Yaacob didn't feel all that great as well to be mistreated like this but he didn't complain at all. He tried to calm me down and took me to Sun Cafe, a restaurant near the our hotel for dinner instead.

The service at Sun Cafe was excellent. The food was great and very reasonable. We shoulda went there in the first place and shouldn't even bother to walk so far to the 'layan-mat-sallehs-only' Lighthouse. I know it's my fault. Coz I wanted to go there. Sigh... Silly silly me!!!

On Day 3:

We decided to just chill at the beach and do nothing. Had enough of sight-seeing and walking around yesterday.

Went for breakfast, then basked under the hot hot sun...

Went to Sun Cafe again for lunch. Hehe... It's our new fav place now... They layan-ed us even though we were just in our beach-wear :)

In the evening, we went to the supposedly biggest shopping mall in Langkawi called the Langkawi Fair Mall coz I wanted to check out some duty-free stuff there. I thought the clothes there will be cheaper but, eeewww, not only were they not cheaper, they didn't look that great. Hmmm... My fault for wasting time and cab fare going there...

We ended our evening by having dinner at the Bon Ton. The food was okay but a bit pricey. The owner of the place, this dude named Amir was a really funny man. He talked to us for a while, about his life in the island and how he was loving it. I can't imagine leaving the city to live in such a quiet, unhappening island!! But... Each person's preference is different. He likes the quiet serence life and I like my life in the city just the way it is. I'll be bored to death if I live in the island.

Bon Ton is a really nice little resort, with 6 villas made to look like kampung houses. Very very charming place. But mahal!!
We went back to the hotel after that to enjoy the wine be bought at the duty-free shop at the Underwater World. Kena con by the salesgirl!! The wine was not good at all!! Uurrrgghhh.... I zzzZZZZ after having 2 glasses...
On Day 4:

Woke up feeling dehydrated to the max. Eeewww... So not a good feeling to wake up to.

Had breakfast then got ready to check out. This is the first ever trip that I didn't buy much stuff. So, it was easy to pack. Hehe...

Got the the airport early, so I checked out the perfume shop. Really con people! They sell 2 bottles of perfume on a discounted rate [duty free rate] so it cost the same as a bottle of perfume selling at the normal price. But, the 2 bottles that they sell together were 150ml bottles. By the time I finish the first bottle, the 2nd bottle would have lari-smell already. Asked whether they sell only 1 bottle on duty free price, they said no. Hmmmph!! In the end, I didn't buy any. Waste of money.

I sat on a chair outside the shop, waiting for time to check in. Saw birds inside the airport. Yess, birds INSIDE the airport!! Okaaay...

Checked in, boarded the plane and flew back to KL. Hmmm... All in all, an okay trip, but I won't go back to Langkawi. Too boring. I don't mind going back to Phuket though. More happening and much much cheaper. And so many things to buy!! Heheheehehe....
